The term “evolution” is derived from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science as well as elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term “evolution” from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into new species in a gradual and predictable way. In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can lead a population to acquire new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind the majority of evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they aren't passed on to future generations. Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. OECs are less well known, but they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a lie. Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility. Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary and also special creation and refer to their belief as “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also known as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from created kinds.” In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original. Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were created simultaneously, and that they developed gradually afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life can't come from non-living matter. In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some scientists and educational institutions are, however, more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula. What is Creationism? When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their books. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next step is to take out portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution. STR claims to have the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the “atheist materialism” that creates a bleak worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that a majority do not believe in evolution. The causes are not clear, but could include religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the United States. The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today. On August 6 and 7 the 7th of August 1993, which coincided with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people. KACR and its members have given talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
